Enclosures:

The minimum cage size that you should aim for is 100cm by 50cm by 50cm (LxWxH) no matter of the species of hamster you have. This minimum size will ensure your hamster lives a happy and comfortable life. Please do not follow guidance from Pet Shops, as they often sell tiny, inadequate cages which look like children's toys, to appeal to the masses of people who purchase hamsters for their children to keep as pets.

Wheels:

Every hamster needs a wheel as they run around 5 1/2 miles per night! The larger the wheel, the better, however the minimum wheel size for a Syrian hamster is 28cm in diameter and for all other species, the minimum size is 20cm in diameter.

Smaller wheels are uncomfortable for hamsters, and they can cause a range of issues such as spinal issues. It is advised that you avoid Flying Saucer wheels. The flat surface of Flying Saucer wheels often causes hamsters discomfort and spinal issues. Wheels made from metal mesh are not recommended for your hamster, as these cause an illness called Bumblefoot. Wheels which have rungs on are also not recommended as they can cause your hamster a lot of discomfort.

Bedding:

In the wild, hamsters dig into the ground to create burrows in which they live in. It is very important to mimic this in your set up, to allow your hamster to live a happy life. It is recommended that you provide a depth of bedding which is at least 25cm (6 inches), ensuring your hamster is warm, happy and feeling safe.
